SaaS link building services: what you are actually buying, and what each one costs
Seven different services get sold under one name. They differ by a factor of nine in price, by months in speed, and completely in who carries the risk. Here is each one with its published market rate.

The short answer
SaaS link building services fall into seven types: digital PR, journalist outreach, editorial placements, guest posting, link insertions, linkable assets and unlinked mention reclamation. Costs range from $141 per link insertion to $1,250 per editorial placement, with digital PR campaigns running $5,000–$15,000 a month.
The seven, at a glance
Every agency in this market sells some combination of the services below. The names are used loosely and often interchangeably, which is how a proposal for “10 high-authority links a month” can mean two entirely different products at two entirely different costs.
| Link type | Cost per link | What to know | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Link insertion (niche edit) | $141 – $600 $141 typical; around $600 on DR 50+ sites | Rarely offered by high-quality, high-traffic publishers. | Ahrefs |
| Guest post | $220 – $609 $220 average; up to $609 for high quality | Direct from the site averages $295; through a vendor, $461. | BuzzStream |
| Manual outreach / editorial placement | $500 – $1,250 $500–$1,250 depending on site authority and relevance | The band most SaaS retainers actually operate in. | Siege Media |
| Digital PR placement | $800 – $1,200 $800–$1,200 per placement | Highest authority per link; campaign-based, so volume is less predictable. | Siege Media |
| Market average, any type | $508.95 +45% vs 2022 (up from $350 in 2022) | The average price SEOs say is acceptable for one high-quality backlink. | Editorial.Link |
Three of the seven do not appear in that table because they are not priced per link. Journalist outreach is usually sold as a programme, linkable assets as a project, and mention reclamation is normally bundled. Each is covered below.
Digital PR
Original data, research or commentary pitched to journalists, earning coverage and editorial links from news publishers.
Cost
$800–$1,200 per placement · $5,000–$15,000 per month as a campaign
Source: Siege Media
Time to first link
6–10 weeks
Link quality
Highest
Predictability
Low — campaigns hit or miss
What you get
- A researched story angle or data asset
- A media list built for your category
- Journalist pitching and follow-up
- Coverage reporting with live URLs
Best fit
SaaS with proprietary data or a defensible point of view.
What to watch for
Ask what happens when a campaign lands zero coverage. A campaign fee with no floor and no make-good is the buyer carrying all the risk.
AI answer visibility: Strongest. News and reference publishers are disproportionately cited by AI answer engines.
Journalist outreach
Your named expert supplies quotes to reporters working on stories, earning attribution links from the published piece.
Cost
Usually programme-priced; not commonly published
Time to first link
2–6 weeks
Link quality
High
Predictability
Medium
What you get
- Monitoring of journalist source requests
- Drafted responses in your expert's voice
- Submission and follow-up
- Published placement reporting
Best fit
SaaS with a credible in-house expert who can turn quotes around fast.
What to watch for
This model needs a real named person available on short notice. If nobody internally can commit that time, the programme stalls and you pay for it anyway.
AI answer visibility: Strong. Attribution links usually carry an expert name, which builds entity association as well as authority.
Editorial placements
Manual outreach to relevant publishers to place a contextual link inside genuinely editorial content.
Cost
$500–$1,250 per link
Source: Siege Media
Time to first link
3–6 weeks
Link quality
High
Predictability
High
What you get
- Prospect list with the vetting criteria applied
- Outreach and negotiation
- Content written for the placement
- Live URL reporting
Best fit
Most funded SaaS — this is the band the majority of retainers operate in.
What to watch for
Ask what proportion of placements involve a payment to the publisher. Many agencies describe paid placements as editorial. That distinction matters for Google policy risk and you are entitled to a straight answer.
AI answer visibility: Good, when placements sit on sites that are themselves cited.
Guest posting
An article written for and published on another site, carrying a link back to yours.
Cost
$220 average, up to $609 for high quality · $295 direct, $461 via a vendor
Source: BuzzStream
Time to first link
2–4 weeks
Link quality
Variable — the widest quality spread of any service type
Predictability
High
What you get
- Topic and site selection
- Article drafting
- Placement and publication
- Live URL reporting
Best fit
Buyers who need predictable volume and can enforce a quality floor.
What to watch for
BuzzStream found only 1.37% of guest post opportunities meet quality standards. Volume pricing here almost always means buying from the rest. Ask for the disqualification criteria in writing.
AI answer visibility: Weak to moderate. Guest-post hosts are rarely the sources AI engines cite.
Link insertions (niche edits)
A link added into an article that already exists and already has some authority.
Cost
$141 typical · around $600 on DR 50+ sites
Source: Ahrefs
Time to first link
1–3 weeks
Link quality
Variable, often low
Predictability
High
What you get
- Identification of existing relevant pages
- Negotiation with the site owner
- Insertion of the link
- Live URL reporting
Best fit
Rarely the right primary tactic for SaaS.
What to watch for
The cheapest and fastest option, which is exactly why it is oversold. High-quality, high-traffic publishers rarely offer insertions at all. If a proposal is mostly insertions, ask why.
AI answer visibility: Weak.
Linkable assets
A free tool, dataset, calculator or original study built on your domain, designed to attract links without ongoing outreach spend.
Cost
Project-priced; typically bundled into content retainers
Time to first link
8–16 weeks
Link quality
High and compounding
Predictability
Low upfront, high afterwards
What you get
- Asset concept validated against link intent
- Design and build
- Launch outreach
- Ongoing link accrual with no per-link fee
Best fit
SaaS planning to stay in the category for years.
What to watch for
The slowest to show results and the easiest to abandon halfway. Confirm who owns and maintains the asset after the retainer ends.
AI answer visibility: Strongest over time. Tools and datasets are cited repeatedly rather than once.
Unlinked mention reclamation
Finding places your brand is already named without a link, and asking for one.
Cost
Usually bundled; occasionally priced per reclaimed link
Time to first link
1–4 weeks
Link quality
Good — the mention already passed an editorial bar
Predictability
Capped by how often you are mentioned
What you get
- Mention monitoring across web and news
- Prioritised reclamation list
- Outreach requesting attribution
- Conversion reporting
Best fit
SaaS with existing brand awareness and press coverage.
What to watch for
A finite pool. Useful early, then it runs dry. Do not accept it as the backbone of a long retainer.
AI answer visibility: Good.
Which to buy
Most SaaS companies over-index on volume and under-index on durability. The decision is easier if you work backwards from three constraints.
- If you need results this quarter — editorial placements. Three to six weeks to first link, predictable volume, and at $500–$1,250 it is the band most retainers are built around.
- If you have a dataset or a genuine point of view — digital PR. It earns the highest-authority links and is disproportionately cited by AI answer engines, but campaigns can land nothing, so agree what happens in that case before you sign.
- If you are planning to be in this category for years — linkable assets. Slowest to show anything, and the only option where the cost per link falls over time instead of rising.
Whatever the mix, get the split in writing. A proposal that says “10 links per month” without saying which of these seven they are is not a proposal you can evaluate — and the difference between the cheapest and dearest option here is roughly nine times the price for the same line item.
Run your own numbers through the cost calculator to see what each mix costs at your volume, or compare what each agency actually sells before you take a call.
